New Observation Platform at DRA:

The freshwater wetland at the Damariscotta River Association’s Great Salt Bay Farm is a haven for ducks, geese and shorebirds. DRA created the wetland in the mid-1990’s in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Now visitors to the farm will have the opportunity to observe wildlife in the wetland from a semi-blind vantage point.

Platform Construction BeginsPlatform in Use at DRAIn October, DRA volunteers con-structed a new observation plat-form at the wetland edge afford-ing clear and intimate views and offering a stable base for spotting scopes and tripods. Conceived by Mark Des-Meules and Tom Arter, and designed by Jack Spinner, the platform will be a resource for DRA field trips and school programs and a draw for birders throughout the region. DesMeules expressed that the platform will “support DRA’s efforts to welcome people to the property to see nature close-up so they can understand why we do what we do.”
